Russell Wilson Has Arrived

The Seahawks have been great for well over a season now. But the official arrival of quarterback Russell Wilson might have been on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints.

Seattle, who became the first team to clinch a playoff spot on Monday, is 11-1. They’re “human” on the road, some say. Well, I disagree. Pete Carroll and crew lost at Indianapolis, a team who has also beaten Denver, San Francisco and Tennessee twice. The only other two possible blemishes on Seattle’s resume could be a near loss at Carolina, a team who has proven to own one of the best defenses in recent memory, and then there was a close call at home versus Tampa Bay, a team who has not given up at all on the 2013-14 campaign. The Buccaneers aren’t tanking for a pick.

The causal fan believes Richard Sherman, Chris Clemons and the stifling defense, coupled with Marshawn Lynch’s running, are the reason behind the success. They are certainly part of it. No one runs like Lynch. No one guards the pass like Sherman. No defense is a ferocious as Seattle’s. There’s no place like CenturyLink Field. And I think there’s no one quite like Russell Wilson.

He’s the only quarterback who hasn’t had a bad game this season. This year Wilson has thrown just six interceptions to his 22 touchdowns. That’s compared to last year’s 26 TDs and 10 picks. You can dismiss that he’s just a running-read-option quarterback. Sure, he rushes for about 40 yards a game but it’s the genius of the run that makes him spectacular. He does not take hits. Period. Wilson never gets hit. Meanwhile, Robert Griffin III is taking punishing blows. Andrew Luck has no idea how to slide. Seriously, watch Luck run. He is great on the move but he’s going to get hurt with the way he slides/dives. On the other hand, Wilson was a baseball player. He was a drafted college baseball player by Major League Baseball. The IQ and athleticism are through the roof.

What I really like about Wilson is his composure. He’s never rattled. When he makes a misthrow, there’s disappointment like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. But Wilson comes back from it to laser one over a linebacker and through a corner. And on the run? Wilson is deadly. His accuracy on the move is unbelievable. Not many quarterbacks make the cross field pass very well. Usually that’s a pick-six. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen him scramble to his right in the red zone. The defense trails to that side of the field. Russell plants, throws and completes a pass to the opposite pylon for a touchdown.

This isn’t an article to slobber over what is deemed “now” in the NFL. No one, including myself, knew how great he’d be. But you must give Wilson what he deserves: a serious look at the MVP nod.
